Mike Hickman guessed correctly that Mystery Car 87 is the Ford EXP. The EXP was a sporty two-seat variant of the Ford Escort which looked a bit like the Mustang of that era. It was produced from 1982-1988 and was supposed to be an inexpensive alternative to the Thunderbird. According to Wikipedia, Ford Division General Manager Louis E. Latalf described it this way. “We’re introducing another two-seater with the same flair, but the EXP will be a very affordable, very fuel efficient car matched to the lifestyles of the eighties.” Somehow I don’t think it resonated as a Thunderbird replacement. But the car did come with an optional turbo charged 1.6L which produced 120 hp. So, I imagine some owners had a bit of fun with it.
