With the Volvo wagon gone, I’d been trying to think of something interesting to drive — maybe a summer car to fix and sell in the fall. Craigslist Cleveland came in handy as there were numerous interesting cars priced under $2000. My ideal goal was to find something $1500 or under. With that amount of money I narrowed it down to a blue 1965 sedan automatic and a white 1966 coupe manual three speed. Both looked to be in decent shape but after acquiring more photos, it appeared that the coupe was in better condition. And after 46 years, I was a bit leery of the automatic transmission.
After multiple conversations with the owner, we agreed on a price for Mystery Car 83 — a white 1966 Chevy Corvair 500 coupe. When it arrived, I was happily surprised to find that it did not have the 95 hp base engine. Instead, it had the mid-grade 110 hp two carb engine. It’s not a perfect car. In fact, it arrived with a shock absorber disconnected due to rust. But all-in-all it appears to be a decent car. My to-do list includes: the shock tower, leaky windshield, non-working sending unit, headlights wiring problem, missing heater exchange duct, and a loud muffler. But beyond that, it seems like a decent car. 🙂
