Mercedes-Benz recently posted a glamor video of the SL63 and SL65 AMG roadsters. Both are incredible cars, one with a Biturbo V8 and the other with a Biturbo V12. There is only a difference of 0.3 seconds to 60 mph between the two, but for me there will always be something more exotic and enticing about having a V12. It may not be that much of an upgrade, but as Luke Vandezande put it, “The V12 isn’t meant to massively outperform. Instead, it offers a more refined, smoother driving experience.”1
Nevertheless, looking at the specs in the US edition 2013 SL-Class brochure, it would be easy to say that the SL65 is the superior machine. However, someone who has driven both told me that the V12s tend to be nose heavy. The SL65 is 231 lbs heavier at 4299 lbs (1950 kg) versus the SL63 at 4068 lbs (1845 kg). So, that may be the case. But who but a race car driver really cares?
“I don’t think anyone will buy an SL65 AMG for pure performance. It’s far too nose heavy because of that V12 meaning it won’t be that ideal for the race track. The SL63 AMG is most likely a much better track car (not that many of them will see the track anyway) or better yet, a potential SL63 AMG Black Series. But people still seem to misunderstand the SL. The SL has always been a comfortable, yet good-handling, GT cruiser. Is it sporty? Yes, in its own way. You can’t and shouldn’t compare it to a Porsche 911 or an Audi R8. Different cars for different people. Although I am not a fan of the new styling, it’s definitely a superb car. There’s no doubt about it. At the end of the day Mercedes offers people a variety of SLs for their wants and needs. … I would think that the high price of the SL65 AMG also makes it more exclusive — and that’s definitely an aspect someone opting for an SL is looking for.2
