Business trips often include a rental car for me. And when there is an opportunity to drive an interesting car, I usually take it. My latest trip took me to Elkhart IN where Enterprise had a limited amount of cars to choose from. My selection was limited to either a Nissan Altima or… a Dodge Challenger. Hmm… what to choose? Should I save gas or have some fun?
As you can see, I chose the Challenger. But, to be perfectly honest, I am not a big fan of Dodge cars. I really don’t care for the design language. However, my children do really like them — especially if they are bright green or some odd-ball color. So, choosing the Challenger would be a treat for the family to see when I arrived home. So, why not?
The other thing is that I have been working with the folks at Schaffer-Danhoff in Willard for the past couple of years. When I am getting a van serviced there, I normally end up in the showroom where they usually have a Hellcat or another interesting high-performance car on display. There is just something about a tricked out car that piques my interest … even if it is not my favorite brand.
I did appreciate the Uconnect and Android Car Audio systems in the vehicle. With hands free bluetooth for my phone, I was easily able to take and make calls without taking my hands off the steering wheel. The system also displayed my phone’s Google maps, so there was no need for a built-in GPS system. And it also ported my iHeart radio app over to the system, so I was able to listen to my favorite station or listen to audio from my phone.
Note: If you are looking for a comfortable car to drive for 3 1/2 hours, this is not the one to pick. I had to stop three times because my back was hurting. The seats are made for racing support not comfort. The ride of the suspensions wasn’t bad; it was just the seats. There was a remarkable difference when I finally got back to driving the Volvo. Now that is a comfortable vehicle to travel in.
Overall, the Dodge Challenger was a nice enough car. For someone who wants a performance car, this would do nicely. It is quick and sounds mean when you accelerate. The sound system and steering wheel mounted controls worked well and made that part of the trip easy to enjoy. However, those seats were just not to my liking. Having to stop every hour is not a good use of travel time. So, I probably won’t rent one again. To each his own. Next time, I will get something comfortable.
