Tuesday’s Family Adventure

Being that Tuesday is my regular day off, it worked out that we could visit a friend whose father had passed away recently. Kurt and I grew up together at Calvary Bible Church in the Columbus area. We were part of the notorious crew who used to cruise up and down High Street and the French Market when we were teens. It’s been a few years since those eventful years, but when I heard of his father’s passing, it seemed like the right thing to do. So, we got the kids out of school and headed down to visit early this morning.

The trip to Columbus takes about three hours (or seven depending on potty breaks). Thankfully, I recently switched over to a 2005 Volvo XC90 V8 AWD from the dealership, so the trip was comfortable for all. This is quite the vehicle with 311 hp and 325 ft/lbs of torque. In other words, it moves when you tell it to. The fuel economy is rated at 15 mpg city and 20 mpg hwy. But the trip computer reported an average of 20.7 mpg including some city driving. That’s not too bad for such a powerful vehicle. And with the third row and a ceiling mounted DVD player, it kept the kids both separated and entertained. That’s always good.

Toward evening, we were able to catch up with Kurt and his family. It was nice to see him again and meet his family after almost twenty years. We talked about some of the humorous memories we had way back when. He also told us about his father’s last days. I knew him as a quiet man who faithfully attended the worship services at Calvary over the years. Thankfully, he knew the Lord Jesus and we have the assurance from the Bible that we will see him again in heaven some day. That has to be the biggest comfort when a loved on passes on. And I think that just being there for a friend helps as well.

After the viewing, my dad took us out for a tasty meal of pizza at (are you ready for this?) Kmart. The Kmart on Bethel Road has a built in Little Caesar’s at the back of their store. But while they were ordering, we sneaked out for a few Jalapeno cheese burgers from White Castle (if I’m sick tomorrow you’ll know why.) We ate with my folks, my sister, and John, a high school student from Korea. During the meal, John told us that there is no used car market in Korea. I’m not sure if it’s just the city dwellers or what, but he says that nobody buys used cars over there. That seems a bit odd. What happens to all the used cars? Interesting thought nonetheless. But even with his preconceived notion about used cars, he was happy to pose with the Volvo.

Meet the Staff: Craig Thompson

Craig Thompson

When I first started working at Leikin Motor Companies, I found out that each salesman had his own personal story. As you can imagine, the stories were varied and quite interesting. Craig Thompson was no different. Did you know that he was an All American baseball player in college and eventually played for the LA Dodgers in the minor leagues?

After his career on the field, Craig eventually teamed up with Leikin Motor Companies as a Mercedes-Benz salesman specializing in pre-owned luxury cars. And let me just say that we’re glad he took his talents to South Beach to have him as part of our team!

This year, Craig has organized a mixed adult softball team which is proudly sponsored by Leikin Mercedes-Benz. With new red and white uniforms, the team is going to attract a lot of attention. And hopefully, the team will play as well as they look!

Special thanks to Kris Brickman for modeling the new uniforms.

A Car Guy … in Cambodia?

I’m home sick today. It’s one of those sinus, sore-throat things. But it did give me some time to think about a few things. After watching two videos about SAAB rally racing, I suddenly got the itch to do some racing around back roads. I’m no speed racer, but I’ve always enjoyed driving on country roads—especially when you can swing the back end of the car with you around the corner!

Then I checked my email and saw this picture of my friends in Cambodia. Michael and his family moved to that country a few years ago and have been learning the language and customs so that they can share the good news of Jesus with the people there. That’s a worthwhile endeavor in any country, but how do you get around in Cambodia—especially in the uncivilized part of the country?

As you can see in the picture, Michael and his family use a motorcycle of some sort. It’s been dangerous and he is still recovering from an in-town accident which required surgery on his leg. But he’s still going at it. The funny thing is that Michael is a car guy. When we first met at a Bible Conference, we swapped car stories and developed an instantaneous friendship. It’s nice to see that God can use car guys in Ohio … and Cambodia.

During the last few days, I’ve been taking pictures of the newly renovated Mercedes-Benz showroom. Along with pictures of the building, the owner had me take several of one of our newest additions. Please allow me to introduce to you our official Mercedes-Benz showroom greeter, Shelley Strobel. Should you visit our new showroom, Shelley will probably be the first face that you see and she would be happy to schedule your test drive. Welcome aboard, Shelley!

Meet the Staff: Brett Leikin

For the summer Leikin Motor Companies was looking to hire an in-house photographer to take pictures of new and used vehicles. Our goal was to find someone who could take pictures and get them to our website as quickly as possible. Sound like a simple job, right? It’s not as easy as it seems. After all, photography is an art. And seeing that a picture can either make or break the deal, we had to have someone we could trust. Thankfully, we found a good photographer.

Brett Leikin is currently a college student at Ohio University. During his summer break he has been taking pictures of new and pre-owned vehicles for the dealership. Take a look at the website and you will notice the quality of pictures that he is providing for the dealership. I wouldn’t be surprised if he dropped out of school for this job. It’s that good! Actually, he will be returning to college at the end of the summer. But who knows? Maybe this could turn in to a career.

Our neighbors are moving away and that’s got us all reminiscing about our good memories together.  My wife went through our neighborhood pics on my other blog and tonight I decided to look through a few from High Maintenance.  Here’s what I found:

Meet the Staff: Horace Lawrence

If you have ever been to Leikin Motor Companies, this man needs no introduction. He has probably washed, vacuumed, or detailed your vehicle. Horace Lawrence is one of the wash rack guys at Leikin Motor Companies.  He is known for his hard work and attention to detail. So, you can understand why so many of our customers value the free car washes available to every service and sales customer.  The results are that good.

Horace has been in the business for over 20 years. So, you might say he has a little experience at what he’s doing. He and the rest of the crew have detailed everything from Hyundai to Mercedes-Benz. And the job is done so well that some customers only bring their vehicles to Leikin when they needs to be cleaned. That’s a good reputation and Horace is a big part of that. Thanks, Horace!

Meet the Staff: Ken Counselman

Ken Counselman

During my time as a salesman at Leikin Volvo, I had the privilege of working with Steve Ours, Jim Vanek, and Greg Schneider.  From the beginning, we were known as the Volvo boys.  Besides the daily beatings I received from the sales manager, and we developed a camaraderie which made for a good work environment.  However, when I took the position of internet manager, it was important to bring in someone who would fit in with the existing team.  I’m pleased to announce that we have found just the person we needed.

Ken Counselman brings over 14 years of sales experience to the dealership, his most recent experience being with Acura and Infiniti.  The first thing you notice about Ken is that he is calm and unassuming.  Customers don’t feel intimidated by his approach to sales.  This has already been evident by the ease with which he has already sold several Volvos.  Ken is 57 years old and resides in Maple Heights, Ohio with his three dogs, Pedro and Chico (chihuahuas), and Sasha (black lab/German shepherd).

If you would be interested in talking with Ken about a new or pre-owned vehicle, feel free to contact him at (440) 946-6900.
